Scottish Housing Regulator (SHR)

The Scottish Housing Regulator (SHR) is currently recruiting Volunteer Tenant Advisors to help ensure tenants’ voices are at the heart of how social housing is regulated in Scotland.

This voluntary role is open to tenants of housing associations, local authorities, and Gypsy/Traveller site residents. Tenant Advisors bring a lived‑experience perspective and support the Regulator by helping to test and review landlord services and tenant‑facing information.

What does a Volunteer Tenant Advisor do?

Volunteer Tenant Advisors may be asked to:

  • Review information and materials produced by landlords to check they are clear and accessible for tenants
  • Give feedback on draft publications and website content
  • Share tenant views and experiences to help inform how social landlords are assessed

No formal qualifications or previous experience are required. Training, support, a small allowance, and reasonable expenses are provided.

Time commitment

  • Flexible involvement
  • Up to 4 activities per year
  • Appointment period of 3 years, with the possibility of extension

Who can apply?

  • Tenants of a social landlord in Scotland
  • Gypsy/Traveller site residents
  • People with an interest in improving social housing services
  • Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged, including young people and underrepresented groups
